For marine bio enthusiasts, a stop in one of the mangrove-lined creeks of Hurricane Hole is a must. Mangrove snorkeling is always a unique experience. The Lind Point Trail brings you up and over the lively town of Cruz Bay. Or, you can opt for the dinghy ride around. Cruz Bay has two distinct spots to explore - Mongoose Junction and Wharfside Village. Take the time to wander around both, hitting up the many little shops and art galleries. A stop for vegan ice cream and popsicles at Irie Pops is always on my list. As the afternoon winds down, pick your favorite restaurant that you scoped out while exploring, and sit down for dinner on land. If you’re looking for a night out on the town, this would be the spot. I lay floating for a while, soaking up the ocean’s soothing energy like a hug. The sun was just beginning to set and the rocky face of Hassel Island was lit up with a beautiful orange hue. This rock has become one of my favorite sunset spots. It’s a small anchorage, usually only shared with one or two other boats. I watch as my neighbors perform similar evening activities. Everyone usually comes out to watch the sun disappear behind the mountainous islands before they begin cooking dinner. We even set the table! It was very nice. And our autopilot was up at the helm doing a fine job as we ate! The funny thing about all this is that my parents experienced a similar situation one Thanksgiving, in the middle of the Pacific ocean. We started out strong on this heading, but slowly got pushed more and more southwards as the wind changed from E to SE. To any non-sailors, this is problematic because boats cannot sail directly into the wind…Going SE in a SE breeze requires zig zagging (tacking) back and forth, more than doubling the distance required to get to your destination. By Tuesday, we were approaching the Turks and Caicos and had a decision to make. We could tack, putting us on a NE course (ugh), or duck in and attempt a sail to windward down the island chain. After being at sea for a week, a nice little sandy anchorage in the Turks sounded pretty nice! But my gut (and brain) told me to tack and get back into the open ocean. So we did.
